2010 June Immersion

What is the Summer Immersion Experience?

The UNO-UiA collaboration grant subsidizes a student immersion trip for 20 students in both directions. The first student immersion experience took place in May 2009, with 20 students from UNO visiting Norway for 10 days (see Experience Norway).  For the second immersion trip, 20 students from UiA will visit USA for 12 days.  The students have been selected among 51 applicants, and represent 12 different study programmes from 5 faculties at UiA. The Norwegian students will also team up with a group of 10 Indian students from Sir Padampat Singhania University in India, making this a truly multicultural experience.

The immersion experience will allow the students to learn first-hand about American society, culture, history, business practices, education, and government.  The UiA students have to contribute their time, interest and the cost of the airfare. All other costs for local travel, ground transportation, educational workshops, hotels and meals are being underwritten by a grant from the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education[i] awarded to UiA in partnership with UNO.

The first five days of the visit include a busy schedule with workshops held by leading researchers from UNO, representing a broad range of topics to match the multidisciplinary student group, corporate visits in six companies headquartered in Omaha, and various cultural activities. Several of the corporate visits will involve discussions with the CEO of the company. The social activities include a baseball match, visit to the Henry Doorly Zoo, and several picnics.

For the remaining part of the trip the group will do a tour of the Midwest, experiencing the beautiful landscape of Nebraska and South Dakota and visiting famous attractions such as Mount Rushmore, Scottsbluff National Monument and the Wounded Knee museum. The group will also visit the Winnebago Reservation for Native Americans.
